Sustainable Living Lab is a pioneering initiative supported by the Fonds Engagement Migros and catalysed by Impact Hub Geneva & Lausanne. Our vision is a world in which business, government, academia and civil society openly collaborate in order to support concrete initiatives that solve the most important challenges of our time by taking action locally. We create spaces for collaborative practices and transformative learning. We use tools such as systems mapping, design thinking and Theory-U to facilitate awareness-based collective action. More specifically, our labs to date have focused on halving food waste in Lausanne by 2030, teaching practical skills for sustainable living and facilitating circular economy transformation in the Métropole Lémanique.
GERG is a research laboratory led by Prof. Bruno Oberle to develop teaching and research in the area of Green Economy and Resource Governance.
GERG strongly believes that a respected “Observatory” for the measurement of the Green Economy on different levels – micro, meso and macro – is a necessary first step towards evidence-based policy-making for the Green Economy. Therefore, part of our work focuses on the development and use of indicators and decision-aid tools to support decision making in the face of uncertainty, conflicting objectives and, in general, complexity.
We hope that our research can shed light on Green Economy governance at the firm level, the urban level, as well as at the national and global levels in both advanced and less developed economies.
NOTE: This partnership has formally concluded as of January 2019. We are currently seeking a new academic partner who is member of a Swiss university.

SDSN Switzerland – Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in Switzerland
Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Switzerland mobilizes universities, research centers, civil society organizations, business and other knowledge centers to create and implement transformative solutions to achieve the Agenda 2030 and Paris Agreement in Switzerland and beyond.
Octanis Microverse is for anyone who would like to apply their theoretical knowledge to a real world project. Octanis promotes and actively implements experiential learning at EPFL, by tackling real-world problems in unconventional ways. Recent projects include the construction and deployment of a low-cost, solar powered rover in Antarctica, an electronic bird monitoring system as well as the invention of a mobile fab lab on one square meter.
Octanis Microverse, our public makerspace, is the independent space in which these projects can progress. Residents can mingle, play, fail, succeed, learn from others, and advance their projects in an open environment which is detached from their “day job”. A selection of advanced prototyping tools, such as 3D printers, are available as self-service and our members are providing training to anyone who wants to use them.
The development fund Engagement Migros supports pioneering projects in the midst of social change, projects that break new ground and test future-oriented solutions. Our approach is to make sure this support is effective, tying funding to coaching and similar services in the Pioneerlab. Engagement Migros is made possible by the companies of the Migros Group thanks to an annual grant of approximately CHF 10 million. It has supplemented the Migros Culture Percentage since 2012.
